MEERUT/BAREILLY: A 32-year-old man, Tejendra Yadav, died on Sunday after he was allegedly thrashed by four of his friends for refusing to throw a "fish party" for them. The incident took place at Chapar Kaura village under Dataganj limits in Budaun district.

Police said Yadav had gone fishing with his friends -- Dharmapal Kashyap, Rupram Kashyap, Mahavir Kashyap and Ram Shankar Kashyap (in their 30s) -- to a village pond on Saturday afternoon and they had a heated argument at the spot.

Dataganj circle officer (CO) Shakti Singh told TOI, "Things turned ugly, when Tejendra refused to throw a party and instead insisted on taking the catch home. The disagreement escalated to verbal abuse and later to physical violence when the accused forcibly took the fish and cooked them. Tejendra was beaten up with sticks, and a blow on the head left him critically injured. He was later taken to a private hospital in Bareilly by his brother Rajendra Yadav. Due to excessive blood loss, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning."

"All four accused were arrested. During questioning, they admitted to their crime. Further probe is on," said CO Singh.

Following a police complaint by the victim's brother immediately after the assault, an FIR was registered against the four -- all from the same village -- under BNS section 109 (attempt to murder). After Yadav's death, the section on "attempt to murder" was replaced with section 103 (murder), police said.
