MEERUT: In a sensational act of crime, six men barged into a house and shot dead three members of a family at a village in Baghpat on Monday afternoon. Two policemen, including a PAC jawan, deployed for the family's security, were also gunned down.
Despite police presence, the armed men barged into Mange Ram’s (68) house, killed him, his daughter Savita (48) and minor granddaughter Preeti.

When PAC's head constable Rakesh Kumar and another policeman, Vijay Pal, tried to stop the gang, both of them were also gunned down. Another PAC constable, Pratap Singh, is critically injured and is admitted in hospital .
Police sources said personal enmity might be the reason behind the killings. Sources said the attack is associated with Pramod Gangnauli, a slain gangster who carried Rs1 lakh reward on his head. Gangnauli died in a police encounter in January 2015 and his body was found in the jungles of Loom village in Baghpat.
The Gangnauli gang continued to operate even after the death of its leader, and it had enmity with Mange Ram's family in Gangnauli village. The family was later given police protection after one of its members was killed by this gang in 2014.

Speaking to TOI, IG Meerut zone, Ajay Anand, said, “The attack was the result of rivalry between the family and Pramod Gangnauli gang. Though Pramod was killed in 2015, his brother Praveen continued to run the gang. Monday’s killings is the handiwork of Praveen. In 2014, Savita’s son Parikshit was murdered by the same gang after which security was provided to Mange Ram's family. On Monday, a contingent of 12 personnel (combination of PAC jawans and Baghpat police) were present in the village, though only three of them were at the victims’ house at the time of attack.”
A Baghpat-based policeman told TOI on condition of anonymity, “In a police shootout on January 19, 2015, Pramod’s brother Ravi Rathi was shot in the foot by police, and a huge cache of sophisticated arms were recovered from a sugarcane field. The gang had at that time held Mange Ram’s family responsible for providing information to police and were waiting to take revenge ever since.”
