Among the injured children, aged between eight and 10 years, is a girl who has been severely wounded and received ten stitches on her head. The other students were admitted to a hospital where their condition is stated to be stable.

According to officials of the district education department, the incident took place around 11 am when an activity class was going on for class 4 students.

“The school is around 20-years-old and is situated in Dahana village of Hapur. The students were sitting inside the classroom when a portion of the ceiling collapsed. Two children received minor injuries and one girl got stitches on her head. Her CT scan and other related medical tests have been conducted and her condition is now stable,” said Archana Gupta, basic shiksha adhikari (BSA), Hapur, adding that a three-member team has been formed to probe the matter.

The incident drew flak from local villagers who blamed it on “poor maintenance of the school building and lack of proper repair works”.
