MEERUT: Holding lathis, wearing white dhoti and donning the ‘Gandhi’ glasses, 150 students made up as the Mahatma marched through

on the 150th birth anniversary of the Father of the Nation to campaign for cleanliness and a plastic-free environment on Wednesday.

The march — by students of Mahaveer Educational Park (MEP), a local organisation with 26 colleges under it — began from Tejgarhi crossing and ended in Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial (LLRM) medical college.

“Mahatma Gandhi stressed on cleanliness. On his birth anniversary, we thought of conducting an awareness drive on cleanliness and rejection of environmentally-harmful plastic. Hence, 150 students dressed up as Gandhi with white dhotis, lathis and round glasses, and marched from Tejgarhi crossing to LLRM,” said Vikrant Yadav, director (administration), MEP.

After reaching LLRM, the students distributed fruits among patients in the general ward. Another MEP director, Anurag Sharma, said, “Our motive is not only that students should dress up as Gandhi, but also that they realise the virtue of Gandhiji’s policies.”

Satish Raghav, director general, MEP, said, “At a time when the entire world is moving towards war, it’s only Gandhiji’s thoughts that can lead us towards peace.”
