Watch: Mangaluru girl, 13, lifts overturned auto, rescues mother trapped under it
MANGALURU: A 13-year-old schoolgirl displayed remarkable presence of mind and composure when she rushed to her mother's aid and lifted an autorickshaw that toppled on her after she was hit by the speeding vehicle.
Chethana, 40, a resident of Rajaratnapura, was hit by the autorickshaw while she was crossing the Kinnigoli-Kateel Road in Ramanagara on Friday. Her daughter Vaibhavi, a class seven student from St Mary's Central School, Kinnigoli, who was waiting just across the road, witnessed the accident and without wasting a second, jumped into the rescue act.
While an injured Chethana is still recovering in hospital, the autorickshaw driver and a passenger in the vehicle were also injured.
The accident and Vaibhavi's remarkable act were captured on a CCTV camera installed at a nearby shop. The footage has since gone viral.
According to sources, Chethana, who works as a bank deposit collection agent, was hurriedly crossing the road to meet her daughter, when the speeding autorickshaw came dangerously close to Chethana. As the driver of the three-wheeler attempted to take a sharp left turn to avoid an imminent collision, he lost control and the vehicle hit Chethana and overturned on her, trapping her underneath.
Ravindra Acharya, Vaibhavi's father, told TOI: "It was a miracle. My daughter showed immense courage."
BP Dinesh Kumar, DCP (crime and traffic), said a suo motu case had been booked against the autorickshaw driver for dangerous driving. The DCP praised the girl's presence of mind. tnn
