Udupi hospital upgrade gains momentum with 150cr nod

Udupi: The state govt has given administrative approval for the revised estimate to upgrade and construct the 250-bed district hospital building, including staff quarters and other infrastructure works.Prabhakara T, undersecretary, department of health and family welfare, said the govt approved the revised estimate of Rs 150.5 crore.
The then chief minister Basavaraj Bommai laid the foundation for the new 250-bed district govt hospital building near Ajjarakad on Aug 12, 2021. The govt had initially approved the project at an estimated cost of Rs 115 crore on Nov 13, 2020. A Hyderabad-based company was awarded the contract, and a work order was issued on Sept 8, 2021.In a letter dated Aug 6, 2025, the chief engineer of health and family welfare department directed the preparation of a revised estimate, including additional works such as shifting the liquid medical oxygen tank and taking up electrical works. The technical advisory committee inspected the site on April 28, 2025, after which the revised estimate was prepared. Based on the chief engineer's submission, the govt gave administrative approval on Wednesday.The project covers the construction of a new building for Udupi district hospital, which has been upgraded from 124 beds to 250 beds. Health and family welfare minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, replying to MLA Yashpal Suvarna's queries, stated that 90% of the civil works for the new hospital building had been completed.
