Stone inscription of Vijayanagara era found in Dakshina Kannada
MANGALURU: An inscription dating back to the 14th century was recovered from the premises of Chandkur Shri Durgaparameshwari Temple in
Epigraphist and retired professor in history from SDM College, Ujire Dr Y Umanath Shenoy told TOI, that the since the inscription is broken in the middle, it has been installed in a corner of the temple with the support of an iron frame. The inscription is Kannada and it has 47 lines and has been written in Shalivahana Shaka (17 Jan 1417AD).
Providing details about the inscription, Shenoy said that the inscription has been written under the orders of Devaraya I of the Vijayanagar empire. The purpose of the inscription is to record the donations given by local rulers and people to the temple. The rulers of Banga dynasty, their subordinates and the public handed over their land to the temple for performing pujas.
The inscription also stated that the Sun and Moon are witness to the arrangement. At the end, it also states that those who do not perform their duties will go to hell. Not performing one’s duties is also equal to killing one’s parents in Kurukshetra and to killing 1,100 cows in Kashi. No one should shy away from performing their duties and the inscription ends with Shubamastu (greetings), said Umanath Shenoy.
