Theertha (55) was the 30th seer of Shiroor Mutt. It is suspected that internal hemorrhaging was the cause of death, after the Seer neglected his health following recent bout of illness.

The Seer, who ascended the Paryaya Peetha for the third time in 2010-12, was in the news lately for his derogatory and controversial remarks against seers of Astha Mutt, and also his decision to contest the 2018 Assembly polls from Udupi. The latest was him threatening to file cases against the Seers for not handing over his Mutt Deity back to him.

Shiroor Seer had claimed that he had handed over the Pattada Devaru (Mutt Deity) to one of the Seers of the Astha Mutt and they were not giving him back. Senior-most Seer of the Mutt Vishwesha Teertha of Pejawar Mutt had said as Shiroor seer himself had admitted of not following the ‘Sanyasa dharma’ he was not capable of handling the rituals associated with the mutt and preserve sanctity. Therefore, ‘Pattada Devaru’ will not be given back to the Shiroor seer, Pejawar Seer had said.

The Astha Mutt also had imposed condition that Shiroor Seer should appoint junior pontiff to carry out the responsibilities of the Mutt since he was "incapable" of doing it.

Laxmivarateertha Swamiji was born in 1964 as Harish Acharya to Vittalacharya and Kusuma at Madamakki, Hebri taluk of Udupi District. He received Sanyasa in 1971. During his first Paryaya in 1978-80, he renovated the Mukhamantapa at the entrance of Sri Krishna Mutt.
