MANGALURU: The aim of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) is to build a healthy society, said retired IPS officer Gopal B Hosur who is also the vice president of IRCS's Karnataka branch.

Hosur was addressing World Red Cross Day celebrations organised in Dakshina Kannada district, District Wenlock Hospital, Dakshina Kannada Working Journalists Association, the Youth Red Cross Society of Yenepoya (Deemed University) and Mangalore University on Thursday. On the occasion, volunteers of the Youth Red Cross Society were given awards and certificates.

“IRCS has a rich history and people from all walks of life, irrespective of caste and creed, are part of it. It is spread over 200 countries. It grooms young people to develop leadership, values, and organisational skills,” said Hosur, adding that he was treated by Dr Nithyananda Shetty, a doctor native of Manglauru, when he was shot by forest brigand Veerappan.

Kumar, CEO of Dakshina Kannada zilla panchayat, said that the IRCS is the house of humanity. It helps students inculcate a service-oriented mind, values, and inner happiness.
