MANIPAL: Policing is a challenge today and not the same as it used to be three decades ago, said DIG western range, Gopal B Hosur here on Wednesday.
He was briefing reporters on security and policing, after formally inaugurating the mobile security vans (patrolling vans) in Manipal University. Hosur said the challenge was stronger in this region because of four factors namely communal tension, underworld, terrorists and now moral policing.
He lauded the efforts of Manipal University in starting a private-public partnership to ensure better security for the university.
The vans will have the university's security men and an armed policeman from Udupi force. It will patrol the KMC and MIT campuses 24x7.
Hosur called upon the police to do their best to ensure security in the region and build confidence in the people. While citing the university's example of PPP in strengthening the hands of the police, he said the public in general could play an important role for better security. Chancellor, Manipal University, Ramdas M Pai thanked the DIG for the cooperation by the local police and was hopeful that the venture would prove beneficial to the students of the two campuses and to the people of the area as well.
Pro-chancellor, H S Ballal briefed reporters on the memorandum of understanding between Manipal University and Udupi police on how the patrolling would take place. The university has provided the vans for the purpose.
The patrolling will help to beef up security cover on the two campuses. Eagle 1 and II, as the vans are called, are equipped with additional communications and other specialized equipment.
