Social worker and Taluk Billava Samaj president Ashok Poojary Beejadi, who is also Anoop's relative, recalled that during every felicitation programme that he participated in, Anoop encouraged the coastal youth to join the Army.

"I visited his house on Wednesday. Despite her pain and ill health, his mother said that she was proud her son gave his life for the country. This reflects the family's strength and sacrifice," he said.

He had participated in the Kodi Habba at Kotilingeshwara Temple, Koteshwara, during his 20-day leave in Kundapur. Anoop had left home just three days ago to rejoin duty. The incident occurred on the very day he resumed duty en route to the army camp.

Last rites today

Community leaders from Beejadi met on Wednesday to arrange Anoop's final rites. His mortal remains is expected to reach Mangaluru International Airport from Belagavi on board IAF AN-32 at around 1am on Thursday. The same will be received at Tekatte on Thursday morning and taken to Beejadi in a procession. It will be kept at the Govt Primary School in Beejadi Padu, where Anoop studied, for the public to pay their respects. The last rites will be performed near the Beejadi seashore, said Ashok Poojary.
