Organs of 65-year-old accident victim harvested

Mangaluru: A successful multi-organ donation was carried out at Father Muller Medical College Hospital (FMMCH) on Sunday, with the victim allegedly becoming the district's eldest organ donor. The donation followed the declaration of brain death of Dayakar Kotian, 65. A gratitude honour was held on Tuesday by the director of Father Muller Charitable Institutions, Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo, for Kotian's family at the director's secretariat.Kotian, originally from Bajpe and residing in Kolar, sustained severe injuries in a road accident on Feb 22 at Malur, Kolar. He was shifted to FMMCH for advanced neurosurgical and critical care under Dr CK Ballal, senior consultant neurosurgeon, along with the critical care and intensive care teams. Despite comprehensive intervention, he was declared brain dead after mandatory clinical examinations and apnoea tests conducted as per medical and legal protocols.
The transplant coordination team and the medical team counselled the family about organ donation. Kotian's wife, Surekha, his brother Keshav Poojary, and other family members gave full consent.The State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO – Jeevasarthakathe) was informed, and organ allocation was done as per state guidelines. After completion of medico-legal formalities under Mangaluru East Traffic police station, organ retrieval began at 2pm on March 1.The left kidney was allocated to Kasturba Hospital, Manipal; the right kidney to NU Hospital, Shivamogga. Skin was harvested, and corneas were retrieved for FMMCH. The department of forensic medicine conducted the post-mortem as required. The mortal remains were handed over to the family at 6pm.Fr Faustine Lucas Lobo later honoured Surekha and the family for the donation, which gave renewed hope to multiple recipients.Fr George Jeevan Sequeira, administrator, FMMC, and Dr Uday Kumar, medical superintendent, FMMCH, were present at the gratitude ceremony.
