Normalcy returns in many taluks of Dakshina Kannada district
MANGALURU: Though rain had abated on Wednesday morning and started pouring late in the evening, the situation was returning to normalcy from the battering the district had received on Tuesday.
Two locations in Bantwal taluk received the highest rainfall over the State- while Sarapadi received 221mm of rainfall, Idkidu received 208mm. Renjala in Karkala Taluk, Udupi District, received 217mm of rainfall.
IMD has issued a red alert for Dakshina Kannada district and an orange alert for Udupi and Uttara Kannada for Thursday, predicting widespread moderate to very heavy rains over the region. Traffic on the NH169 was affected for a few hours after a hillock slide brought down a tree blocking the road at Ane between Gurupur and Kaikamba.
NHAI officials visited the spot and cleared the tree to make way for traffic. This stretch has always been prone to landslides every monsoon after the NHAI started the four-laning project.
DK district received 129mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours till Wednesday morning, as against a normal average of 37mm. Bantwal taluk received 164mm; Puttur 149mm; Mangaluru 116mm; Moodbidri 130mm and Kadaba 118mm of rainfall.
The rain monitoring cell at the Udupi deputy commissioner's Office, the district received an average rainfall of 97mm of rainfall, with Karkala receiving 120mm of rainfall and Hebri taluk receiving 127 mm of rainfall. Kundapur received 90mm; Uduoi 85mm; Byndoor 80mm; Brahmavar 71mm and Kaup received 89mm of rainfall.
As many as 12 houses in Udupi district reported damages due to tree fall and rain.
The water levels in the Nethravathi river at Bantwal and Uppinangady were well below the danger levels, but Tuesday's spate has left many areas still inundated.
