MANGALORE: New Mangalore Port that added two additional berths in 2006 and 2011 and with one more under completion has floated tender for another berth. Further two warehouses are also under construction. The draft of 14mtr has also been made available. Despite the decline of iron ore traffic, the port was able to handle 37.04 million tonnes of cargo in 2012-13.
The cost of Cargo handling has also come down due to competitiveness.
Stating this in his address at the 67th Independence Day celebration here on Thursday, P Tamilvanan, chairman, New Mangalore Port Trust said greenery in and around the Port has increased alongside traffic handling and this is mainly due to efforts and contributions made by the deputy chairman T S N Murthy and his team of officers at the Port. As a result the Port has bagged Greentech Award apart from ISO 14001 certification.
Tamilvanan emphasized that NMPT, the only major port in Karnataka, is performing well in all spheres. Due to augmentation of infrastructure facilities in the port, the capacity of cargo handling has increased. Overall traffic of bulk/break bulk including container and railway traffic has also increased. Transparency in port management is the key word of NMPT that has seen the port register consistent growth over the past nine years, he said.
A parade by CISF, Port Fire Service, NCC, Cadets and Scouts and Guides was held on the occasion. Tamilvanan impressed on the students to follow ethics and moral values taught by national leaders. He recalled sacrifices made by freedom fighters in securing independence. While paying respect and gratitude to freedom fighters, Tamilvanan emphasised the fact that one should not forget the contribution made by freedom fighters of Dakshina Kannada.
