MANGALORE: As part of a business promotion initiative, New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) organized a joint trade meet in association with Hassan District Chamber of Commerce and Industries at Hassan on Friday. The purpose of the meet was to interact with importers, exporters of Karnataka, especially from Hassan region, where a large volume of containerized cargo is being generated, a release from NMPT stated.
Exporters of items such as coffee, linen, garments and textiles, and importers of coal, officials from railways, ICD, CWC, KIADB, and container main line operators attended the meet and had a fruitful interaction on handling cargo through the Port.

P Tamilvanan, chairman, NMPT who briefed about infrastructure addition and ongoing developmental works at the port urged traders to make use of the port, which is 165-km from Hassan.
Tamilvanan took the opportunity to create a forum for initiating a dialogue with exporters of gherkins and main line operators operating from NMPT. After the interaction the representatives of exporters and buyers of gherkins expressed their willingness to route their cargo through NMP. Container operators as well as private ICD operators assured full support by offering competitive ocean freight for the exporters/importers.
Regarding improvements in road/rail connectivity, Tamilvanan assured to take up the matter with the departments concerned. Nagendra Gupta, president, Hassan District Chamber of Commerce and Industry welcomed the gathering. S Gopalakrishna, traffic manager, NMPT proposed the vote of thanks.
