Mangaluru: A group of like-minded persons have demanded that the state government name the Kadri Park to

Lalbagh

road stretch after former

Union

minister, the late

George Fernandes

.
Richard Moras, convener, Konkan Lekhak Sangh, Karnataka, addressing the media here on Friday, said that George Fernandes was a tall leader, and that naming a road after him is a good gesture.
The group has suggested that the road from Kadri Park to Lalbagh be named after him.
“The work should have started earlier, but it was not possible due to the pandemic. We have just started the preparations, and will approach the Mangaluru City Corporation, people’s representatives and state government, urging to name the road after George Fernandes. There is a saying that great leaders are not rightly honoured in their native place. But let it not happen in the case of George Fernandes, who was born in Bejai, and extended his scope of work to the whole of India,” said Moras.
The other members include Titus Noronha, Konkani poet and activist; Divakar M, former mayor, Mangalore City Corporation; Ronald Gomes, former district governor, Lions Club International, and

William Pais

, author and columnist.
