Naik, Konkani folklorist, dead

K Vasudeva Naik, eminent Konkani poet and folklorist, died on Monday. He was 88. Ailing for some time, Naik's passed away at a private hospital in Kundapur in Udupi district.

MANGALORE: K Vasudeva Naik, eminent Konkani poet and folklorist, died on Monday. He was 88. Ailing for some time, Naik's passed away at a private hospital in Kundapur in Udupi district.
Naik received the honorary award presented by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy at a function held in Kundapur last month. He was the honorary editor of now defunct Konkani magazine, Konkani Sourabh from Bangalore.

Naik's efforts against undesirable social practices resulted in the abolition of animal sacrifice at Mari Habba observed in Kundapur. He was instrumental in founding many social organizations that aimed at spreading literary awareness and against superstition. He is survived by seven children, including two daughters. His wife pre-deceased him two years ago.
