Muslim women seek justice for Hindu widow in Udupi land case
Udupi: In a rare incident reflecting communal harmony, two Muslim women approached district minister Laxmi R Hebbalkar in Udupi on Saturday, seeking justice and assistance for a poor Hindu widow who has been unable to build a house on land allotted to her by the govt nearly 35 years ago.
The plea was made during the minister’s visit to Udupi. The woman, Girija Shettigar, an elderly widow from 80 Badagabettu village in Udupi taluk, has been living alone in a rented house since her husband’s death. In 1989, she was allotted five cents of land under a govt housing scheme, and a title deed was issued in her name.
However, forest department officials allegedly objected to her occupying the land, claiming it falls within a reserved forest area, and refused to hand over possession. With limited financial means, Girija could not pursue legal remedies and continued working as a daily wager while paying rent.
According to reports, the family of her neighbour, Salahuddin, has supported her for years, helping her approach authorities to secure the land. Despite repeated efforts, the issue remained unresolved.
They informed the minister that some well-wishers were willing to help construct a house if possession was granted. During the minister’s stay, the two women approached her. “We do not want anything for ourselves. Please help that woman,” they said.
Moved, Hebbalkar said, “This is our India. Muslim women are shedding tears for a poor Hindu woman. BJP leaders in Udupi should learn from them. “ She called it a reflection of unity and assured action through the DC.
