MU to commence UG classes from Aug 14

Mangaluru: Mangalore University has decided to commence undergraduate classes from August 14, a month later than the earlier decided date of July 17, due to practical reasons.The decision was taken during an all-college principal meeting held on Friday. The principals suggested that it is impractical to start UG classes on July 17 as semester exams are scheduled to begin on the same day and there will be a shortage of staff and classrooms at the colleges. According to the academic calendar prescribed by the Karnataka Higher Education Council, the academic year should commence on July 17. “It is practically not feasible to start classes as told by the higher education council. There are practical problems raised by the college principals. Considering their suggestions, we have now decided to start the academic year from August 14,” said Jayaraj Amin, vice chancellor (acting), Mangalore University.Amin said that principals informed them that if they start classes in advance, especially for first-year UG, there will be issues with the availability of classrooms as they are occupied for the conduct of exams. “There will also be issues with the availability of faculty as they are deputed to exam work. The semester examinations are likely to end by August 12. Considering all these factors, we decided to start the classes from August 14,” added Amin.Kishore Kumar CK, registrar, Mangalore University, shared that commencing the academic year from August 14 will help in starting classes for all UG courses at the same time. “If started early, there will be an issue with a separate examination for the first UG. As per this plan, the examinations for all courses can be conducted at the same time,” he said. The MU will give priority to the evaluation of sixth-semester courses. Kumar said that the evaluation of even semester papers will commence 20 days after the completion of the examination. “We will give first priority to sixth-semester candidates as they have to apply for higher studies or seek jobs,” he said.
