MCC to begin work on water treatment plant

Mangaluru: In a bid to make the 24x7 drinking water project a reality, the Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) is all set to commence the work on the construction of 125 MLD capacity water treatment plant at Adyar, about 10 km from the city.The plant will be constructed near the new barrage cum bridge, built across the Nethravati river at Adyar-Harekala. The project will help the city to mitigate the drinking water crisis during peak summer. Currently, 160 MLD water is being lifted from Thumbe dam and supplied to Mangaluru, Mulki, Ullal and en route villages between Thumbe and Mangaluru. Premanand Shetty, chief whip of the ruling party in the MCC council, told TOI that the work on additional water supply infrastructure near the new dam at Adyar will be taken up at an estimated cost of Rs 120 crore. “The Jalasiri - Karnataka Integrated Water Management Investment Programme (KIWMIP) Scheme is being implemented in the city through the Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) to ensure quality drinking water supply to the city on a 24x7 basis. Savings from the funds sanctioned for the Jalasiri Scheme, which is being implemented at an estimated cost of Rs 791 crore, will be used for the development of infrastructure at Adyar. The city corporation will also pool funds from various other drinking water schemes for the purpose. The government will take up the work at Adyar through the Suez Projects Private Limited, which is the implementation agency for Jalasiri,” Shetty said. The new dam at Adyar-Harekala, located at downstream of Thumbe dam, is likely to be commissioned soon after all issues pertaining to submersion land in the nearby areas are solved by the government. Mayor Sudheer Shetty Kannur told TOI that an additional source of water is essential, when the city corporation is implementing the Jalasiri, the 24x7 drinking water supply project. A bhumi pooja will be held soon for the new water treatment plant to be constructed in 10 acres land at Adyar, he added.

MCC to hold spl meeting to discuss Jalasiri scheme soon

The Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC) will hold a special meeting to discuss the Jalasiri scheme, which aims to provide 24x7 drinking water supply in 60 wards of the city. The scheme, estimated to cost Rs 791 crore, includes providing water connections with meters to all properties, preparing a policy for public stand posts for drinking water supply, regularizing unauthorized water connections, and underground drainage connections. However, residents have raised concerns about the lack of 24x7 water supply and the need to reserve Rs 204 crore for operation and maintenance.

Work begins on comprehensive Thuraiyur drinking water scheme

A comprehensive drinking water scheme worth Rs 108.9 crore has been inaugurated in Thuraiyur municipality, Trichy district. The project, funded by AMRUT 2.0, aims to benefit around 54,700 people by providing 8.5 million litres per day of drinking water. The scheme includes the construction of wells, a pumping station, and new tanks. In addition, 10,136 houses will receive direct water connections, and pipelines spanning 95 km will be installed. The project is expected to be completed by March 2025. Minister K N Nehru also distributed cows to women's self-help groups and inaugurated a health sub-centre.

Implement project to utilize surplus water

Residents of Echambadi village in Dharmapuri are urging the state government to implement a project that would utilize surplus water from K Echambadi check dam to fill 66 lakes in the district. The previous government had allocated funds for the project, but it has not been taken forward by the current DMK government. The project would benefit farmers by addressing their irrigation and potable water needs, as well as benefiting agricultural land. The water resources department has stated that the project can start if funds are allocated.
