MANGALURU: Mangaluru City Police on Friday arrested three persons in connection with an attempt to murder case reported in Mangaluru South police station limits. City police chief M Chandra Sekhar named the accused as Ahmad Shinan, 22, behind Nadupalli Mosque, Sheikh Shahbaz, 22, of Kudroli, and Anish Ashraf, 19, also of Kudroli. The trio had made a futile bid on the life of Mohammad Ijaz, 26, resident of Nellikai Road in the city on December 2.
The accused, who lay in wait for Mohammad Ijaz to return to his flat, attacked him from behind with sharp edged weapons even as he was alighting from the scooter that he was driving in front of the flat. Even as Ijaz fled the scene to save his life and ran up the stairs, the trio chased him and attacked him with talwar causing injuries to his head and also stabbed him on the back with knives and fled the scene, leaving a grievously injured victim in a pool of blood.
Personnel of Mangaluru South Police, where a case of attempt to murder was registered, based on a tip off nabbed the accused near Surathkal junction as they were coming back to the city after being on the run since the incident.
Police also seized a scooter, talwar and knives used by the accused. Chandra Sekhar said the accused had fled to Goa after committing the offence and were returning to the city when they were intercepted and taken in to custody.
Noting that the incident had taken place on account of personal enmity between the victim and the accused, Chandra Sekhar police investigation is now focussing on other people behind the incident, those who sheltered the accused and provided them with logistical and other kinds of support when they were on the run. City police chief lauded the steps taken by K U Belliappa, PI, South PS, Ananth Murdeshwar, PSI and station staff in arresting the accused.
