Mangaluru: KMC Hospital performs surgery on malpositioned gall bladder

has performed a technically demanding surgery of left sided

malpositioned gall bladder removal

in a patient.

The patient was also having a rare condition called situs inversus totalis, where the normal arrangement of internal organs is in a reversed condition. This surgery was performed by Dr Satyanarayana N, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and minimally invasive surgeon, KMC Hospital, that put an end to the suffering of the patient from the past one year.

The patient came to KMC Hospitals with complaints of acute abdominal pain and in a critical condition. Post examination, she was diagnosed with a condition called acute cholecystitis which is an infection of gallbladder and pus formation, due to multiple accumulation of gall stones. The patient was recommended to undergo a gallbladder removal surgery by laparoscopy.

However, the complication in this case was the the organs inside the patient’s body being in the reverse side – it is a rare developmental abnormality, where in all the organs are in the reverse side as compared to where it generally is in a typical human body. Her heart was present in the right side; her gall bladder was on the left side, whereas in a normal case it would be on the other side.

Dr Satyanarayana said: “We performed minimally invasive surgery on the patient and hence the recovery was faster and incisions were smaller. The surgery was less painful and blood loss was minimal. These reverse-sided organs are typically complicated to be operated on, since the surgeon needs to reorient and operate on rotated organs. The surgeons have to be aware of the malposition and the trauma involved. It is technically demanding and requires expertise in handling such cases.”
