Law and order in Mangaluru city satisfactory: Top cop

Mangaluru: The law and order in Mangaluru city over the past one year has been satisfactory, said director general of police and inspector general of police, M A Saleem. "I have instructed Mangaluru city police commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy and other officials to continue their good work," Saleem said after holding a review meeting with senior officials from Mangaluru city and Dakshina Kannada police here on Tuesday.On some confusion regarding transfers in the police department, the top cop said a large number of police personnel from North Karnataka have been working in Mangaluru. "We have been giving them the opportunity for a transfer from one unit to another unit after 10 years of service as per a govt order. This is being done in phases so that the work here should not be affected and the vacancy should not be less than 50%. Keeping this in mind, we carry out the transfers," the DG&IGP said. Sudheer Kumar Reddy, Mangaluru city police commissioner, said the sanctioned strength of civil police constables (CPC) is 801, but the existing strength is 685, he said, adding that 116 posts (14.4%) of the CPCs remain vacant. "If we relieve these 63 CPCs (who requested transfers), vacancies will become 22.1%. Since it was crossing 15%, we didn't relieve them as per govt order. We relieved all assistant PCs who were transferred because we have no issues. The city is peaceful because they actually work hard in spite of all issues. They have also given up promotions to get inter-district transfers, and the pain of constables is real and we know it better than everyone. We have to look into their welfare also and at the same time we have to take care of the situation in the city also," the commissioner said.
