Karnataka women panel chief visits acid attack victim in Mangaluru

Mangaluru: Nagalakshmi Choudhary, chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women (KSCW), visited an acid attack victim at the Wenlock District Hospital on Saturday.Belthangady police registered a case on Feb 28, after a 44-year-old woman was allegedly attacked by her husband, who poured acid on her face. As per an FIR registered at the Belthangady police station, the complainant, unable to enter her home due to her periods, asked her husband for food, which he refused to provide. She then went to her brother's house to eat and returned home. While she was lying in the verandah, she saw her husband holding an acid can and pouring it into a small container. Frightened, she went to her brother's house and informed him of the incident.
Later, when she returned home with her brother's son, the accused allegedly threw the acid from the container onto her. This resulted in acid burns on the left side of her face, left arm, and hip. She was taken to Belthangady hospital and then transferred to a hospital in Mangaluru for further treatment. The woman suffered 10% to 15% burns.Nagalakshmi said that the majority of harassment cases against women take place due to alcoholism, and this needs to be considered very seriously."I visited the woman and directed the authorities to release adequate compensation to her. The commission already recommended the govt ban liquor in the state. However, the govt did not consider this recommendation," she said.Choudhary said that the mother of a student acid victim pledged her gold ornaments for her daughter's 4th surgery.
