UJIRE: Just ask any child about the games they play and the common answer is cricket. Thanks to the influence of modern culture, today's children are unaware of various kinds of indigenous games, which is real fun and gives joy.
However, the World Tulu Convention provided an occasion to play and enjoy the Tulu indigenous games both for children and adults.
Here, adults can play games like `attebooru,' `berchendu,' `tonka,' `palli pattune' etc., and refresh their childhood memories or let the children play in the ground.
The indigenous games are totally different from today's modern games, because, with minimum expenses one can enjoy maximum fun and proper exercise for the proper growth of a child's body, said the organizers.
While children are seen enjoying games such as `buguri,' `pimpuri,' `girgitle,' pulling wooden carts etc., the other games like `lagori,' `tappangayi,' `tarai kuttuna,' `kutti donne' etc., has attracted the teenagers.
`Rama-Ravana' is a special game designed on terms of gymnastics and `shakthi kallu' offers the youths an oppurtunity to demonstrate their physical strength.
Though many of these games are vanishing today, many children and youngsters were seen playing the game with full enthusiasm. Today's children have no idea about these games, but they will definitely enjoy if they are given a chance to try these games.
"My children are playing these games for the first time. But see how enthusiastic they are," said Poornima from Mangalore. Even the parents showed equal enthusiasm to encourage their children to participate in the indigenous games. Adults were not left behind in playing games like `lagori,' `tappangayi,' `tarayi kuttuna' etc. The age-old method of `petla' (bamboo cannon) used to sprint the wild animals is also being displayed. This device when fired using kerosene, makes sound similar to a gun.
