Festive celebrations? Keep heart healthy

Some people are seeing an uptick in holiday heart syndrome at the hospital. Dr. Rajesh Bhat told the reporter that most of the heart-related issues are due to heavy drinking, which is known as alcohol-induced atrial arrhythmia. This is a condition in which the atria (upper chambers) of the heart beat rapidly, and the ventricles (lower chambers) don't beat as fast. This can cause the heart to be underfilled, and it won't be able to pump correctly.

In simple terms, after a heavy drinking session, the atria (upper chambers of the heart) start beating rapidly at a rate of 200-250 beats/minute, and the ventricles (lower chambers of the heart) also beat rapidly at a rate of 150 plus per minute. As a result, the heart will be underfilled and will not be able to pump.
