Mangaluru: Surathkal police on Tuesday arrested Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha (ABHM) state president Rajesh Pavithran on charges of extortion and for allegedly stealing the laptop of a businessman.
A senior police officer confirmed the arrest and said Pavithran was arrested based on a complaint filed by his business partner Suresh.
He was accused of stealing Suresh's laptop and threatening to use his personal information.
Conspiracy alleged
He allegedly made an extortion bid. He was arrested under various sections of the IPC. He was produced before a magistrate who granted him bail, police said. Reacting to Pavithran’s arrest, ABHM state general secretary K Dharmendra alleged that the incident was part of a conspiracy.
He told reporters on Wednesday, “There is a hidden political conspiracy behind the arrest of Pavithran. We will protest if those responsible for the incident are not arrested.”
He said that Pavithran was not given any notice nor was his family informed about the arrest.
‘Smear campaign on social media’
"In the run-up to the assembly election, this is an attempt to suppress us. They will not succeed in achieving their goal. A smear campaign is being carried out on social media. We will hold a dharna in front of the police station if all those behind this act are not arrested,” he said.
He added that the complainant was not his partner, but was working for him and had left behind the laptop.
