MANGALORE: Incidentally, Yogish Bhat, deputy speaker of the state assembly and Mangalore City South MLA left the council hall immediately after Jayanthi announced the results. The voting for the post of deputy mayor, reserved for SC woman corporator, was uneventful, BJP nominee Amitha Kala defeated Congress nominee Appi by a 35-21 margin. Four corporators – one each from CPM and JD(S) and two independents – remained neutral in these elections.

Elections to four standing committees – taxation, finance and appeals; health, education, and social justice; town planning and development; and accounts – was held later. Election of Gulzaar as mayor meant that the process for constituting taxation, finance and appeals standing committee to which she was nominated had to be held afresh. Geetha Nayak, outgoing deputy mayor, was elected unopposed to this vacancy in elections later in the day.
