DK issues PVTG ration cards to 262 Koraga families in a rapid drive

Mangaluru: The department of food, civil supplies, and consumer affairs in Dakshina Kannada, in a rapid drive, provided ration cards to 262 Koraga families, who come under the Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTG).
At a time when ration cards are not issued in the state, PVTG ration cards are issued to Koraga families, enabling them to access benefits under various central and state govt schemes. Hemalatha S, deputy director (DD) of food, civil supplies, and consumer affairs, told TOI that a survey of PVTG families was conducted under a special drive through the Integrated Tribal Development Programme (ITDP) 15 days ago.
While the district has a Koraga population of more than 4,600, a list of 361 eligible PVTG families was identified and sent to the govt. Records, including their Aadhar Cards, income certificates, caste certificates, and other details, were collected from 262 families, and their applications were processed by the department. All the 262 eligible families were issued cards between Dec 24 and 27, she said.
On the remaining 99 families, Hemalatha said that many of them are yet to visit and submit documents, and some cannot be reached due to continuous holidays. "Some of the applications could not be processed due to mismatches in caste certificates and other documents. During the field survey, many of them gave old documents, leading to mismatches in the information during the application process," she said, adding that the process will continue.
A total of 1,670 PVTG families are identified in Karnataka for the distribution of BPL cards. Only two tribal communities, including Koraga and Jenu Kuruba, are considered PVTGs in Karnataka. The Koraga community is found only in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, while Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, and Mysuru districts have Jenu Kuruba populations. In Mysuru, 365 families, 342 in Kodagu, and 516 families in Chamarajanagar are identified as PVTGs (Jenu Kuruba). Meanwhile, there are 86 PVTG (Koraga) families in Udupi district, she added.
Officials in Udupi informed that while there were 86 requests, 14 applications were approved by the food, civil supplies, and consumer affairs department. Most of them are already members of other ration cards, sources said, adding that the date was extended for raising new applications until Jan 4.
