Special zumba session for diabetes awareness held
Udupi: In observance of World Diabetes Day, Kasturba Hospital Manipal, in collaboration with the department of endocrinology, organised a special zumba session at Malpe Beach on Friday. The event aimed to spread awareness about diabetes and promote a healthy, active lifestyle among the public. Dr Sahana Shetty, professor and HOD of endocrinology department, said diabetes is increasing at an alarming rate with 11% prevalence in India. Diabetes is the main risk factor for heart diseases, kidney failure, foot ulcers, and vision loss in adults. It also affects mental health and quality of life. Hence, there is a need for a holistic approach to diabetes care, which not only addresses physical health but also mental well-being. The theme of World Diabetes Day 2024 is ‘Diabetes and Wellbeing'. Dr Padmaraj Hegde, dean of Kasturba Medical College (KMC), and Dr Avinash Shetty, medical superintendent of Kasturba Hospital, said the zumba sessions are vital in educating the public about diabetes prevention and encouraging people to incorporate physical activity into their daily routines. It's a step toward a healthier, diabetes-free future.
