City police observes National Road Safety Month 2025
Mangaluru: As part of the National Road Safety Month 2025, a road safety event was organised by the Mangaluru City Traffic police at the Fiza by Nexus Mall in Pandeshwar on Thursday. School and college students, the public, bus and auto union leaders, and representatives from other organisations participated in the event. Students from St Agnes College performed a street play on road safety. Live CCTV footage of some accidents in Mangaluru were shown to raise awareness about road safety among the audience.The event, presided over by city police commissioner Anupam Agarwal, featured special guest Tulu film actor Aravind Bolar and other dignitaries. They emphasised the importance of following traffic rules and raising awareness about road safety. Traffic wardens Francis Maxim Morris, Roshan Roy Sequeira, and Sunil J D'Souza, along with auto driver Ramesh, were honoured for their continuous service. A quiz on traffic topics was organised for the participating students, with prizes distributed.Road accidents in MangaluruIn 2022, there were 153 fatal accidents and 775 non-fatal accidents, totalling 928 cases, with 160 deaths and 1,049 injuries. In 2023, there were 159 fatal accidents and 848 non-fatal accidents, totalling 1,007 cases, with 165 deaths and 1,156 injuries. In 2024, there were 160 fatal accidents and 863 non-fatal accidents, totalling 1,023 cases, with 165 deaths and 1,186 injuries.Cases recordedIn 2022, city police recorded 1,63,454 cases, with fines amounting to Rs 6,43,31,100 imposed. In 2023, police recorded 1,36,493 cases and imposed fines amounting to Rs 5,41,88,300. In 2024, while 1,44,859 cases were recorded, fines amounting to Rs 6,65,76,800 were imposed.Over the past three years, awareness about traffic rules was raised in approximately 288 schools and 176 colleges. Additionally, street plays and placard displays were conducted at 883 major roads and key locations to educate the public. The police commissioner urged the people of Mangaluru to adhere to traffic rules for their safety. Similarly, actor Bolar shared his personal experience of surviving a two-wheeler accident because he was wearing a helmet, urging the public to remain vigilant on the roads for their safety and the well-being of their families.
