MANGALURU

: An 11-year-old boy gifted himself a new lease of life when he heroically fought his way out of a

python

's grip in

Bantwal

taluk of

Dakshina Kannada

district on Tuesday evening.

Vaishak received wounds and abrasions in his fight with the non-venomous reptile, but he's safe, doctors said. The class VI student of

Adrash English-Medium School

had gone out to play at around 6.30 pm when he felt someone “pulling my hair from behind“.

He said, “I turned around only to find -to my utter shock and disbelief -a huge python, about 10 feet long. I reacted within seconds, but the animal sank its fangs into my thigh by then. It tried to bite my hand when I pushed it away. I summoned courage, quickly bent down to pick up a piece of ceramic tile lying around and poked its eyes with the force I could muster. With that assault, the python suddenly released me from its clutches,“ the boy said. Before the boy could heave a sigh of relief, the python made a startling comeback by attempting to coil itself around his legs, but he won this round easy. “It was a 20-minute wrestling with the snake,“ he said.

Vaishak's cousin, a graduate, saw him in a pool of blood and informed others. He was rushed to a couple of hospitals before he was admitted to Fr Muller Hospital, known for treatment for snake bites. The boy's mother, Harinakshi Suresh, said pythons stray around in their area, but never attacked anyone until now.

Being treated for septic

Doctors said the boy has received two major wounds. “There are no poison bites. He is being treated for septic,“ a doctor said.
