MANGALORE: It was a trip down memory lane when the 1987 batch of BCom students of Canara College here came together on Christmas. It was a good 25 years after their graduation that most of the batchmates met up. Sixty-six of a batch of 80 students attended the event and recalled "good-old memories" of student days, all thanks to A Badrinath Kamath, then union council secretary. It was Badrinath’s resolve in getting together his batchmates scattered in different parts of the globe.
Many of them had come on a short holiday from the US and other Gulf countries specifically for reunion. The batchmates, who met at the college campus in the morning, started the function with the hoisting of national flag and by garlanding the bust of the college founder Ammembal Subba Rao Pai.They sat in the same class and in the same seats that they had warmed 25 years ago. Prof Sathish Bhat gave the class a nostalgic feel by calling out the attendance and also by delivering a mock lecture. The highlight of the event was that all the 66 students of yore cut a 10-foot cake to mark the occasion. Badrinath Kamath termed it as "a wonderful experience" to come together after a gap of 25 years."In these 25 years, all of us have undergone changes and one or two of our classmates are all set to get their children married shortly," he said.
The "students" took the opportunity to felicitate their teachers who included college and pre-university lecturers and even those who were retired. Having relived the college moments, the "students" disbursed after lunch and met once again in the evening for a family get-together.Singer Srikanth Kamath, one of the batchmates, provided a perfect milieu for the family gathering with his orchestra. College principal G N Bhat appreciated the students for the success they have achieved in their career and in different walks of life. He recalled the indelible mark left by this batch by setting up a garden, precedent set by them in celebrating Sharada Pooja and their active participation in NSS.
