Accident victim donates organs
Udupi: The family of an accident victim decided to donate his organs. Raghavendra,35, of Kundapur, met with an accident on Feb 17, at 12.20am. He was admitted to Kasturba hospital, Manipal, after sustaining severe injuries. His condition rapidly deteriorated despite exhaustive medical intervention. He was officially declared brain dead twice, by a panel of expert doctors in accordance with the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994. His family made the decision to donate his viable organs, thereby offering a lifeline to others in need.
Following the protocols outlined by Jeevasarthakathe, SOTTO, Bengaluru, Raghavendra's liver and one kidney were sent to AJ hospital, Mangaluru on Wednesday. Lungs were sent to KIMS hospital Secunderabad, Telangana. Kasturba hospital, Manipal, retained one kidney, corneas, and skin for registered patients awaiting transplantation.
Medical superintendent Dr Avinash Shetty said that organ donation is a noble endeavour, and urged others to embrace such altruism. He extended heartfelt gratitude to Raghavendra's family for their decision.
