ACB arrests officer on charges of graft

MANGALURU: The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) has trapped a government official from Dakshina Kannada district on charges of accepting bribe on Thursday. This is teh first arrest made after teh formation of ACB.

Officials of ACB took K R Ranjith, village accountant of Punacha village in Bantwal taluk, arrested for accepting Rs 6,000 from a citizen. The ACB laid a trap after receiving a complaint from Nagaraj Bhat. In his complaint, Bhat had alleged that Ranjith was demanding Rs 6,000 to get a khata transfered for his newly purchased land. Following the complaint, a team of officials led by ACB Mangaluru Western Zone police superintendent S S Chennabasavanna conducted a raid, ACB sources said.

A case under Anti-Corruption Act 1088 has been booked against Ranjith, sources said adding that the accused has been produced before the court.

Sources said that Ranjith is the first government official in Dakshina Kannada to face anti-corruption charge through ACB.
