MANGALORE: Police have arrested four persons accused in the Chethan Shetty murder case. Speaking to reporters here on Sunday, Dakshina Kannada superintendent of police, A S Rao said, the accused, Mustafa (30), Hameed Sarfan (21), Mohammad Azaruddin (21)and Mohammad Ashraf (27), were arrested from Surathkal on Saturday.
While Mustafa has been arrested on charges of conspiracy, three others were directly involved in the murder.
Another accused, Farooq, is suspected to have left the country to the Gulf and police are taking steps to bring him to book, he said.
Chethan (28), was attacked by a group of unidentified persons who came in two wheelers at Jeppu Kutapdy in the city limits on May 28. Chethan succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital the next day. Though the police took into custody certain persons suspected to be involved in the case, they could not gather sufficient information during the interrogation.
However, the police maintained vigilance over the suspected persons. Taking a clue from Mustafa's suspected movements, the police took him into custody on Saturday and arrested others, based on the information he provided, he said.
Replying to queries, the SP said, the attack on one Ashraf at Marnamikatta led to the murder of Chethan. During the interrogation, the accused told the police that frequent attacks and assaults were happening at Marnamikatta and the accused had resorted to murdering Chethan, thinking that the murder may put a halt to the chains of attacks. He said the police have not yet received any information about the involvement of any organization in the crime.
