1 dead, many injured after car falls off Pumpwell flyover

Mangaluru: A man was killed and several people were grievously injured, after a speeding car overturned and fell off the newly inaugurated Pumpwell flyover, and fell on a stationery car below, on Saturday evening. The Pumpwell flyover was thrown open to traffic on January 31, 2020, after a decade-long wait.
The victim is Praveen Fernades, 45, a mechanic working at a garage in Gorigudde.

Police said that the incident took place around 5pm, when a speeding car coming from Nanthoor and moving towards Thokkottu overturned and fell on another stationary car, parked below the flyover. The victim was inside the parked car.
Victims were rushed to nearby hospitals
Police sources said that locals and motorists present on the busy junction, immediately pulled out the occupants from the mangled cars and rushed them to nearby hospitals.
Praveen, who was rushed to a hospital, succumbed to his injuries there. The condition of the injured are critical, and they are being treated at a private hospital.
Hour-long traffic pile up
The incident threw traffic on the busy Mangaluru-Kasaragod road out-of-gear. There was a traffic pile up for nearly an hour. However, it was cleared with the help of the jurisdictional traffic police station.
