The Thirumalai Nayakar Mahal, known for its gigantic pillars, is a fusion of Rajput and Dravidian styles of architecture.

The palace was constructed by King Thirumalai Nayakar, who ruled Madurai in the 17th century AD. Only a quarter of the original structure remains now while the rest vanished due to the ravages of time.

The architectural beauty is the second major tourist attraction in Madurai after the Meenakshi Amman Temple.

Usually, Rs 10 is collected from Indian nationals as entry free while foreigners have to pay Rs 50.

The free entry would not be applicable for the light and sound show in the evenings which is conducted by the tourism department.
