Madurai: Two Tasmac shops, situated in Anjal Nagar near Kudal Nagar in city limits were ransacked by women protesters on Saturday, following which nine of them were arrested. After the state government closed down liquor shops along highways and attempted to relocate them inside residential areas, protests started gaining steam against the setting up of these shops.
Incidents of people protesting against relocating liquor shop and ransacking of the shops were reported widely.
Under these circumstances, residents of Anjal Nagar started protesting against two shops functioning in the area in the last few months. They alleged that these shops attached with bar have turned a nuisance in the residential area. There have been incidents in the past with tipplers picking up street brawls and teasing women in an inebriated state.
Viduthalai Siruthaigal Katchi had called for a protest against these shops on Saturday. Many women and VCK functionaries picketed the shop in the afternoon. They started raising slogans against the state government and demanded the closure of liquor shops at Anjal Nagar. At the height of protest, the women broke into one of the shops and started ransacking. The liquor bottles were broken outside the shop. As tension prevailed, police rushed to the spot and nine women were taken into custody.
