Vice-principal assaulted prof: MUTA

Madurai: The Madurai Kamaraj, Manonmaniam Sundaranar, Mother Teresa and Alagappa University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) on Wednesday strongly condemned the assault on the association’s state president A T Senthamarai Kannan allegedly by MKU College vice-principal P Kabilan during Independence Day celebrations at the college campus in the city.In a statement, MUTA state general secretary M Nagarajan said that A T Senthamarai Kannan, an associate professor of Commerce in MKU College, was participating in the flag hoisting ceremony at the college on Tuesday. “At that time, vice-principal P Kabilan shouted at Senthamarai Kannan and slapped him on the face. He also attacked him with a chair and threatened to kill him,” he said, adding that three other professors witnessed the incident.The association claimed that Kabilan assaulted Senthamarai Kannan questioning his role behind Students’ Federation of India (SFI) students complaining to MKU registrar (in charge) against him for not allowing a protest at the college on the Manipur issue. Meanwhile, Tallakulam police registered two assault cases based on complaints by both Senthamarai Kannan and Kabilan against each other. “The incident is highly condemnable. The MKU administration should also take notice and initiate departmental action against vice-principal Kabilan for assaulting an associate professor,” said Nagarajan.
