Madurai

. A division bench of justices T Raja and D Bharatha Chakravarthy directed the state government to file a status report while hearing a public interest litigation filed by the managing trustee of Vaigai Nadhi Makkal Iyakkam M Nagarajan alias Rajan.
The petitioner stated that under the smart city programme, a project called ‘Vaigai river front development scheme’ was devised for beautification of both the banks of the river. He stated that construction waste and waste generated while laying roads were dumped inside the riverbed. He stated that authorities should take steps to impose a penalty on those dumping garbage in the river and steps should also be taken to prevent dumping of wastes and discharge of sewage water into the river.
