Vaccination camp for stray dogs to be held in Madurai

Madurai: The civic body has planned to conduct a 10-day camp starting from Monday to administer anti-rabies vaccines to both stray and pet dogs in the city. With the increasing number of dog bite cases in the city, the corporation has sought the assistance of animal activists and residents to identify stray dogs and aid corporation officials in vaccinating them.According to corporation officials, the massive campaign aims to address the menace of aggressive and rabid dogs in the city. City councillors have consistently raised this issue. In the last council meeting held in August, councillors from the South and North zones reported seven dog bite cases recorded in Sellur in a single day.A senior health official stated, “The camp will be held in all zones. The camp in each ward will commence at 6 am and conclude at 10 am. We request the assistance of animal activists in the city to help identify stray dogs in every ward to ensure the camp's effectiveness.” tnn

Stray dogs released haphazardly after summit: Activists

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has been accused of releasing stray dogs without proper tagging or coordination with local caretakers, leading to the dogs being relocated. Animal welfare activists criticized the MCD for not considering the territorial nature of stray dogs and for not using scanning facilities to identify dogs with microchips. In response, the MCD stated that the dogs were being released in their respective locations in accordance with ABC Rules, 2023. The MCD's actions were challenged in court, but the court ruled in favor of the MCD, stating that they were following the law.

Six dog bites reported every hour in city

Ahmedabad city in Gujarat, India has reported 1.57 lakh (157,000) dog bites over a three-year period from 2020 to 2023, averaging six bites per hour. The statewide total stands at 12.55 lakh (1.255 million), averaging 48 bites per hour, with eight deaths from dog bites. Ahmedabad did not report any deaths during this period. The number of dog bites gradually increased over the years, with Ahmedabad reporting 46,436 bites in 2020-21, increasing to 60,330 in 2022-23. Rural areas also reported high numbers of bites due to the absence of dog population control initiatives.

Stray dog problem needs to be addressed with urgency: HC

The Delhi High Court has addressed the issue of stray dogs in the national capital, stating that it needs urgent attention. The court quashed two FIRs against a woman who was accused of her dogs biting a man and his father in 2014. The court observed that the dispute between the parties was private and had been settled amicably. However, the court emphasized the seriousness of the stray dog problem and requested the municipal commissioner to take appropriate action.
