In separate incidents that took place in Teppakulam and Thideer Nagar police limits, two men posing as policemen tricked elderly women and swindled gold chains valued at around Rs 4 lakh. In both the incidents, the modus operandi was the same. The conmen also targeted elderly woman as they were soft targets.

In the first incident, two men standing near the Hanuman Temple – Vaigai South Riverbed Road junction, approached a 70-year-old woman who was walking by. They identified themselves as police personnel in civil dress and warned the woman, identified as K Sagunthala from Meenambalpuram and reprimanded her for wearing multiple gold

jewellery

. They warned Sagunthala that the area is

crime

prone and is like inviting danger.

They also asked her to take off the jewellery and keep it her bag. When she took out the chains weighing 15 sovereigns, one of them offered ‘help’ to bundle the valuable in a paper and keep it inside her bag. But he pocketed it. Meanwhile, the other one diverted her attention.

Similarly, in another incident in Munichalai road on Tuesday, K Leelavathi, 70, from Balarengapuram was intercepted by two men and conned in a similar fashion. They escaped with the gold chain weighing five sovereigns. In both the incidents, the women realised that they were cheated only after reaching home and checking the bags.

Based on complaints, cases were registered on Wednesday and investigation to trace the conmen was on.
