Tirunelveli: A confrontation between two inmates broke out into a clash between two groups of inmates at the Palayamkottai Central Prison in Tirunelveli on Wednesday evening.
According to police sources, the tension reportedly escalated after a few inmates were relocated to a remand block where another group was already housed. A heated verbal spat further turned into a physical brawl.
Due to this, two inmates sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment at the prison hospital.
Senior prison officials told TOI that during mealtime, one of the inmates reportedly used slur words against the other, which caused sudden provocation, and the clash erupted between a few members of both the groups, resulting in a minor laceration injury on the inmate's forehead.
He said that the clash was due to the bedding issue and dismissed the caste angle.
A case was registered by Perumalpuram police, and further investigation is underway.
