Trio held in Tirunelveli, 28 sovereigns recovered

Madurai: Tirunelveli police arrested three people including a teenager who were involved in a chain-snatching spree in the city. Twenty-eight sovereigns of gold jewellery worth over Rs.7 lakh was recovered from them.

The arrested people were identified as S Muthukumar (21), S Muthu(19) and A Balakrishnan (22)- all from Palayamkottai in Tirunelveli district. A special team was formed under assistant commissioner, Nandha Kumar after a chain snatching incident on December 21, in which an elderly woman was robbed off her 7 sovereign gold chain near Perumalpuram by a bike-borne duo.

Subsequent investigations and footage from CCTV cameras in the city helped police zero in on the youngsters who were spotted in the crime scenes before and after the robbery. “They had indulged in snatching incidents in the junction, Pettai, Palayamkottai and near the Government Medical College,” a police officer said.

The two-wheeler used for the crime was also seized. All three were produced before a court and remanded to judicial custody.
