Author, Tamil intellectual Raj Gowthaman passes away

Madurai: Author and intellectual Raj Gowthaman, passed away in Tirunelveli on Wednesday due to illness. He was 74 and was survived by his wife and daughter. Chief minister M K Stalin has condoled Gowthaman's death.The mortal remains of the author were kept for public homage at Thiagarajan Nagar in Tirunelveli city, and the final rites will be conducted on Thursday.Gowthaman wrote research works on subaltern dalit literature, postmodernism, and Sangam literature, and penned more than 50 books, including novels. He received various literary awards for his contributions to the field. Tamil Nadu Progressive Authors recently conferred him with a lifetime award. Some of the authors visited the ailing Gowthaman at his house on Tuesday and handed over the award to him.Chief minister Stalin, in his message, stated that he was saddened by the demise of Gowthaman and expressed his condolences to his wife Bama, his sister-author Bama, and family members. "He (Gowthaman) contributed richly to fields like socio-history research, literary criticism, translation, autobiography, and his own creative works. He was the face of progressive thought in Tamil, and his demise was a great loss to Tamil society," said the chief minister.
