Treat juvenile offenders in Nanguneri case as adults: PUCL to govt

Madurai: People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has urged the government to treat the juvenile offenders in the Nanguneri case as adults and punish them under IPC sections. Three boys from the maravar community hacked their classmate and his sister from dalit community in Nanguneri in Tirunelveli district.
Addressing reporters here on Wednesday, PUCL’s vice-president R Murali and their team who took out a fact-finding study said that the chances are likely that the students from the maravar community are likely to be tried under Juvenile Justice Act though they are booked under various sections of IPC. They should be treated as adults as per the guidelines of the Supreme Court in the Nirbhaya case where minors above the age of 15 indulging in heinous crimes should be treated as adults.
The attack on the siblings was premeditated as they came prepared with a long sickles and systematically caused injuries to cripple him for life rather than killing him. The attack also indicates that the caste sentiments are getting strengthened in the region.
PUCL also urged the state government to pass a special order enabling the dalit boy to appear for the Class 12 examination.TNN
