Transit pathway set up in East Masi street to unload goods

Madurai: In an attempt to ease traffic in East Masi street, which is congested due to mini trucks and tricycles unloading goods for traders in the street, city traffic police have created a dedicated temporary transit pathway for about 200 metres with barricades on a trial basis to unload goods for trade.The street is crowded not only because of the traders but also devotees proceeding to Meenakshi Amman temple from Sellur, Goripalayam and other northern parts of the city. As loadmen are habituated to blocking the roads to unload goods at shops in the street, traffic stagnates during peak hours. Deputy commissioner (traffic) S Arumugasamy said the dedicated transit pathway with barricades was meant to facilitate safe unloading of goods by tricycles and vans by stopping for a while without disturbing traffic. “The area between the shops and barricades can be used for parking two-wheelers,” he added. B Arul Raj, a loadman, said the idea of creating a transit pathway should be appreciated but two-wheelers are being parked on the transit route sometimes blocking the pathway. “Traffic police have to regulate two-wheelers and place a no-parking sign board near the start of the pathway,” he said.
