Madurai: A 16-year-old boy who suffered a fatal fall at his home in Madurai has saved five lives through
organ donation.
Yagakannan, a resident of Vaithiyanathapuram, sustained severe head and spinal injuries after falling from a height around 10 pm on April 2. He was initially admitted to a private hospital and later shifted to the Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in the early hours of April 3.
Despite treatment by neurosurgery and intensive care teams, he was declared brain dead on the morning of April 5.
His father, Chandrasekar, consented to donate his organs.
The organ retrieval was carried out at GRH on April 6. The liver was sent to a hospital in Perambalur, while the kidneys were allocated to hospitals in Coimbatore and Tirunelveli. Both corneas and skin were retained at GRH.
Hospital sources said five patients benefited from the donation.
A post-mortem was conducted before the body was handed over to the family. The district administration accorded state honours to the deceased in recognition of the organ donation.
