Students showcase oratory skills at zonal level ‘Speak for India’ competition
Madurai: The students, who took part in the zonal level ‘Speak for India’ competition held in Madurai on Tuesday showcased some splendid oratory skills.
The 26 participants were selected from the district level competition held recently at various places like Madurai, Dindigul, Theni, Sivaganga and Virudhunagar. An initiative by Federal Bank in association with the Times of India group, the event took place on Solaimalai College of Engineering at Veerapanchan.
Director of Put Chutney, a youtube channel, Rajmohan Arumugam, head of the department of English Kamala, assistant professor of English R Sona both from Solaimalai College of Engineering were the judges.
B Pakiaraj, a 3rd year Economics student of Arul Anandar College, who spoke defending on the construction of the statue of unity shelling out a whopping around Rs 3,000 crore, stated that such iconic construction will instill the feeling of oneness among the Indians, who are divided on various lines and face dispute in various fronts including water sharing between states.
Just like the Abraham Lincoln statue in the United States, which was erected as a symbol of unity, Patel statue will also symbolize the unity among the Indians. Unity is important for a country to grow by leaps and bounds, he stated.
S Sankar Sharma, a 3rd-year Chemistry student of Thiagarajar College spoke on the importance of following uniform dress code for the college students. He said that the uniformity in the dress can bring about the discipline expected from the students. While discipline is the essence of education, there is no wrong in making it mandatory for the students, he stated.
The marks awarded for the candidates were kept secret and the announcement of the winners would be made only after completion of competitions in all the five zones. The entire program was video recorded.
The event held in Madurai was second zonal competition, while the first one was held in Tuticorin. Five zonal events have been planned. The events in Trichy, Salem and Chennai will take place in the days to come. The students selected from the zonal level competitions will take part in semifinals and finals scheduled to take place in Chennai.
